What is “Hypnotherapy?"

What is “Hypnotherapy?”

Hypnosis is possibly as old as mankind. The old myths and misconceptions about hypnosis have given way to proven, scientifically sound applications. Today the use of hypnosis is seen in a variety of fields including: medicine, dentistry, law enforcement, professional sports, counselling and education. Since the British Medical Association (BMA) and the American Medical Association (AMA) approved the use of clinical hypnosis in the 1950’s, hundreds of thousands of people have found hypnosis to be an effective way to stop smoking, lose weight, change thinking and habits and otherwise improve their lives.

Our minds work on two levels ~ the conscious and the unconscious. We make decisions, think and act with our conscious mind, but it is our unconscious mind that controls our behaviours and habits.

In hypnosis, the client is actually in an enhanced state of awareness, which suppresses the conscious mind so the subconscious mind can be revealed. This altered state of consciousness turns off the analytical left hand side of the brain and heightens the awareness of the right hand non-analytical side of the brain. Since our behaviours and habits are resident in the subconscious mind, it is this part of the mind that has to change for behaviour and physical states in the body to improve.

While the client is in the relaxed state of hypnosis, the therapist is able to communicate directly with the unconscious mind and implant positive suggestions, ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations that change thinking, physical sensations and behaviours. In this way, hypnotherapy reprograms patterns of behaviour enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts, pain and behaviours to be overcome.

Will hypnosis work for me?

Generally speaking, every normal person is “hypnotizable.” (That is, people with an IQ of at least 70, and no severe mental disorders). Therefore, virtually anyone will achieve successful results using hypnosis. In fact, the smarter you are the easier it is to go into the state of hypnosis.

How will I know if I am hypnotized?

Many people can’t tell the difference between the hypnotized and the waking states. Some people feel very relaxed and calm, others feel a lightness. In hypnosis, you simply have a stronger focus internally, plus experience a wonderful deep relaxation. One thing that people do notice is a change in their daily behaviours.

Is hypnosis safe?

Hypnosis is completely safe. You are aware and in control at every moment and can terminate the session at any time. Hypnosis is not sleep, nor can you get “stuck” in a state of hypnosis. You can’t be made to do something against your will! Hypnotherapy is not about being made to do things ~ in fact ~ it’s the opposite ~ it’s about empowering the client to make the change.

Hypnosis is a safe, relaxing, and very enjoyable experience.

Over the last century, thousands of pieces of research have been carried out by highly trained professionals into clinical hypnosis, and has shown hypnosis to be the most powerful tool we possess for improved performance and change.
